Bioinformatics Salary in India (2026): By Role, Experience and Sector

Bioinformatics salary in India: a career pay chart rising from fresher to senior roles, beside a rupee coin and a pay scale card

By Dr. Tamanna Anwar, PhD, Founder, Centre of Bioinformatics Research and Technology (CBIRT)

“What does a bioinformatician earn in India?” is one of the first questions students ask us, and most answers online give a single number with no source. The honest answer depends on where you work, how long you have worked, and which skills you can prove.

This guide brings together salary data reported by employees on AmbitionBox and PayScale, real job listings, and official government pay scales, with every figure linked to its source and date.

Quick answer

Career stageTypical pay in IndiaSource
Fresher, industry (Bioinformatics Analyst)₹2–9 lakh a yearAmbitionBox, 34 salaries, June 2025
Fresher, government research project (Project Associate-I)₹25,000–31,000 a month + HRACSIR-CCMB advertisement, Dec 2024
Early career, 1–4 years (Bioinformatics Scientist)About ₹6.5 lakh a year on averagePayScale, 17 salaries, Aug 2025
Mid career, 5–9 years (Bioinformatics Scientist)About ₹8.4 lakh a year on averagePayScale, 8 salaries, Aug 2025
Government scientist (Scientist-C, Pay Level 11)₹67,700 a month basic pay to start, rising to ₹2,08,700DST advertisement, Aug 2026

A word of caution: salary sites rely on what employees choose to report, and the samples for bioinformatics are small. Treat the figures as ranges to plan with, not promises.

Bioinformatics salary by role

RoleReported payWhat drives the rangeSource
Bioinformatics Analyst₹2.1–13.8 lakh a year (154 salaries)Experience, employer and NGS skillsAmbitionBox, June 2025
Bioinformatics Analyst, biotech industry, 0–5 years₹3.8–8.4 lakh a yearNarrower than the overall range: fewer outliersAmbitionBox, June 2025
Bioinformatics Scientist₹3.5–40 lakh a year (65 salaries); PayScale average about ₹7.1 lakhA very wide range from a small sample, so the average is more useful than the extremesAmbitionBox, July 2025; PayScale, Aug 2025
Senior Genome Analyst (PhD fresher, clinical genomics)₹6.5 lakh a yearA PhD replaces the experience requirementMedGenome job listing, Dec 2025
Project Associate-I, bioinformatics (Tata Memorial ACTREC)₹39,370 a month consolidated (₹31,000 + 27% HRA)Government scale plus city HRAACTREC job listing, Jan 2026

The wide Bioinformatics Scientist range is the most useful lesson here: the title covers everyone from a new MSc graduate to a team lead at a global company. Read the experience and skills in a job description, not just the title.

Bioinformatics salary by experience

Pay rises steadily for the first few years, then depends heavily on specialization and seniority.

ExperienceBioinformatics Analyst (AmbitionBox)Bioinformatics Scientist, average (PayScale)
Fresher₹2–9 lakh (34 salaries)—
1 year₹1.8–7.7 lakh (42)About ₹6.5 lakh for 1–4 years (17)
2 years₹2.2–8.4 lakh (29)
3 years₹2.9–9.6 lakh (22)
4 years₹3.8–9 lakh (22)
5–9 yearsToo few reports to showAbout ₹8.4 lakh (8)

AmbitionBox figures updated June 2025; PayScale figures updated August 2025. The bottom of each analyst range barely moves while the top climbs.

Government and research salaries (fixed pay scales)

Government labs, institutes and universities pay on fixed national scales, so these figures are exact rather than self-reported. All are monthly, before HRA (house rent allowance), which is added on top at a rate that depends on the city.

PositionMonthly payEligibilitySource
Project Associate-I₹25,000; ₹31,000 with NET/GATEMaster’s degreeCSIR-CCMB advertisement, Dec 2024
Project Associate-II₹28,000; ₹35,000 with NET/GATEMaster’s degree plus experienceNIBMG advertisement (bioinformatics posts), Dec 2023
Junior Research Fellow (JRF)₹37,000Master’s degree and NET, GATE or a similar national examIISc circular adopting DST’s 2023 revision
Senior Research Fellow (SRF)₹42,000JRF eligibility plus 2 years of researchSame
Research Associate I / II / III₹58,000 / ₹61,000 / ₹67,000PhD (plus 0, 1 or 2 years of experience)Same
Scientist-C (permanent)₹67,700–2,08,700 basic pay (Pay Level 11), plus DA and HRAPostgraduate degree and 4 years of R&D experience, or a PhDDST, Aug 2026; ICMR Scientist-C (Bioinformatics), 2022

Two things stand out. Qualifying NET or GATE adds ₹6,000–7,000 a month to project posts, which is worth the exam fee many times over. And a permanent Scientist post, once DA and HRA are added, starts above the mid-career industry averages reported above, which is why those posts are so competitive.
