    About the Department
    The overarching goal of the Molecular Education, Technology and Research Innovation Center (METRIC) is to build a core facility that offers its clientele seamless access to qualitative and quantitative analysis for a diverse range of molecules for their research across multiple platform technologies and molecular scales. By coordinating three key platform technologies (X-ray crystallography, NMR spectroscopy, and Mass Spectrometry) across the departments and offering them as an integrated portal, it is envisioned that synergy and collaboration will be maximized throughout the greater university community.

    METRIC will provide the following services:

    • X-ray crystallography: small molecule and macromolecular crystal structure determination
    • NMR spectroscopy: small molecule and macromolecular solution structures, protein-ligand interactions, protein dynamics
    • Mass spectrometry: small molecule identification and structural analysis, targeted and untargeted metabolomics, proteomics, lipidomics, glycomics, mass spectrometry imaging.
    • Education and training: each METRIC Lead Research Scientist will provide appropriate training to new users, enhance graduate and undergraduate education opportunities, organize educational materials, short courses, and workshops to support users, develop standard operating protocols for specific workflows, and coordinate to host regular forums for users to interact and share new methods.
    Essential Job Duties
    Primary duties of the Research Scholar include, but are not limited to the following:
    • Designing and conducting –OMICS experiments with collaborators;
    • Developing new methods for extraction, separations, mass spectrometry and data analysis.
    • Preparing journal quality figures and experimental sections in collaboration with faculty.
    • Collaborating in writing grant proposals with faculty seeking to engage in –OMICS research.
    • Assisting in the development of Standard Operating Procedures and workflows within METRIC.
    Other Responsibilities
    Perform other related duties as assigned.
    Minimum Education and Experience
    • Relevant Ph.D degree (or relevant terminal degree), or relevant Master’s degree with at least 5 years of formal post-degree professional work experience.
    Other Required Qualifications
    • Effective experimental design, presentation skills, data analysis, and writing.
    • Ability to work effectively with collaborators, ability to lead –OMICS projects  n METRIC.
    • Ability to conduct scientific and educational presentations internal and external to NC State.
    • Ability to develop workflows and SOPs.
    Preferred Qualifications
    • Experience with modern mass spectrometry platforms including SLIM-Q-TOF, Ambient Ionization Sources, Mass Spectrometry Imaging, Metabolomics, Proteomics and/or LC-NMR-MS background desirable.
    • Experience in untargeted and targeted –OMICS and lipidomics, advanced separations, HRAM mass spectrometry, tandem MS, quantification, IROA, credentialing, bioinformatics, and mass spectrometry imaging.
    • Strong publication record.
    •  Ph.D in Analytical Chemistry with a focus on biological mass spectrometry is highly preferred.
    • Published record of achievements in –OMICS research.
