    Department Overview

We at the Knight Cancer Institute are driven to cure cancer.

So, if you’re innately inquisitive, motivated, and truly want to explore novel opportunities that seek to make a real difference in the way we treat cancer, then this position may be right for you.

This Postdoctoral Researcher will work at the intersection of biomedical data science and cancer metabolic reprograming that occurs during cancer treatment as part of the Thomas Lab. Specifically, we seek to identify metabolic vulnerabilities that occur under selective pressure of treatment, which can then be exploited to eliminate tumor cells. Previous publications from our group include: Genes & Development 20, 2067-2084; Metabolites 5, 82; Cell 174: 758-769; Nature Medicine 12,122-127; Cancer Journal 15, 406-420; Science Translational Medicine 3(85): 85ra47; J Clin Oncol 36: 2492-2503; Cell Rep Med 2, 100267.

    Function/Duties of Position

You will be creative and driven; able to analyze and apply emerging molecular tools to address basic and translational questions in our NIH-funded research area, including cancer metabolism, cancer therapeutics and biomarker discovery. You will be a highly-experienced and motivated candidate with a background in molecular/cellular biology and/or genetics, who will be responsible for independently and collaboratively performing experiments in the laboratory which will include DNA, RNA, Protein, CRISPR design and expertise, Western blotting, Q-Real Time PCR, Tissue culture, Transfections, Functional Metabolomics, Flow Cytometry, Imaging, working with mice, and then carry out data analysis resulting from experiments. Analytical expertise in Excel, Graph Pad Prism, Calcusyn is required, and some bioinformatic experience (R, Python) is an advantage.

Evaluation of cancer metabolism, gene function and key signaling events will include the use of in vitro assays, and mouse models; however, special emphasis will be placed on increasing the relevance of experimental findings to human cancer by validating potential therapeutic targets using primary patient samples (e.g., organoids, patient-derived explants) and in vivo xenograft models.

    Key responsiblities include:

    • Cell culture including drug treatments
    • Basic molecular biology techniques including transfections PCR, Q-PCR, bacterial cloning, DNA/RNA extraction, Western blots, metabolism studies, flow cytometry, etc.
    • Data analysis using bioinformatics software
    • Development of new assays in clinical samples, e.g. organoids, single cell analysis

    Required Qualifications

    Education:

A PhD degree in Cell Biology/ Molecular Biology/Genetics

Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Competencies):

    • Strong attention to detail
    • Ability to design and perform experiments, and analyze data independently
    • Highly motivated and committed to academic biomedical research
