    If this sounds like you, we ‘re looking for someone like you to join the Biological Sciences Group at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab!

    We are seeking a Bioinformatician to support operational genomics research. As part of the Research and Exploratory Development Department, our group conducts basic and applied research to characterize pathogen evolution and understand complex biological communities. We work to develop genome sequencing and analytical approaches to support data sharing (enabling decision making) and to understand variability in natural populations over time. In this role, you will conduct bioinformatics analysis for environmental surveillance applications, targeting diverse biologicals ranging from viruses to marine species. You will work with a team of biologists to build systems that integrate genomic surveillance capabilities to increase the speed and utility of genomics. You will apply traditional and pioneering approaches to characterize complex microbial and eukaryotic communities, and develop methods to enable future capabilities.

    As a Bioinformatician you will:

    • Conduct basic and applied research and development to analyze genomics data to characterize the genetic diversity of viruses, bacteria, and eukaryotic organisms.
    • Establish and maintain collaborative research with national and international laboratories to facilitate sustainable genomics research programs.
    • Support new concept development activities to expand utility of operational genomics research across the APL enterprise.
    • Develop and maintain effective working relationships across the Department, Laboratory, and with external sponsors.


    You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you…

    • Possess a Master’s degree in Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Computational Biology, Computer Science or other related fields. or Bachelor ‘s degree with 3+ years of relevant experience.
    • Are proficient in one or more scripting languages including shell scripting, R, Javascript, and / or python.
    • Have expertise in working in Linux environments and running software toolkits from the command line.
    • Have experience using compute resources including an HPC cluster and / or cloud-computing environment.
    • Have experience in analyzing NGS data, building NGS data workflows, and visualizing NGS data.
    • Have strong communication and collaboration skills ability to lead and contribute to teams from any position.
    • Are able to obtain a Secret level security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

    • Have experience in application of AI / ML to biological systems data.
    • Have experience with visualization techniques using D3 for web-based interactive methods, ggplot2, and / or matplotlib.
    • Have experience with web-development techniques, both front and backend. Examples include, but are not limited to, Vue.js, React.js, Node.js, Flask, Ember, etc.
    • Have proficiency in C++.
